Fracking coming to Ireland

Fracking is a method of extracting natural gas from the ground and is a process used extensively in America.

It has caused water and air contamination and it’s only now that the damage is done that people realize how widespread the damage is.

The process involves drilling deep into the ground and injecting a mixture of water and  chemicals into the drilled well at high pressure.

The result of this is the rock is fractured and the gas is extracted. More that half of this water mixture remains in the ground and is free to enter the water table, streams and rivers resulting in contamination. Large pockets of gas that have laid undisturbed for millions of years are also free to enter water supplies.

To watch this from afar is one thing, but to realize that this is coming to Ireland and more specifically could be coming to Cork raises serious issues.

What has happened in America is articulated in a film called Gasland. When you see water coming from a kitchen sink tap catching fire when a match is put to it you know there is something seriously wrong as a result of fracking.
